For the past nine years, Phani has been working with children and teens, using dance to make learning a fun experience. “I was always interested in finding ways in which art can be used to uplift lives of children. I found that dance was an effective tool to bring about change,” said this breakdance expert. Phani pointed out that he has created a module, which can be replicated in classrooms to enhance learning.
“It is a module to create a better environment for the kids to learn. This will help in understanding the role of teachers and parents, how they can work towards creating better environment and have a positive impact on kids. In order to teach, you first need to create a bond with children. I found that by high fives are a great way to create an instant bond with the children.
Dance can also be used to teach languages or difficult scientific theories. When I teach dance steps, I use words, which they remember for a long time,” explained the artist, who is confident that this module can be customised according to the needs of the educational institution.
Phani, who believes in using unconventional methods to create interest among kids to unlock their creativity, is working on creating spaces where youth can come together to enjoy learning and explore their creativity. “Kids need to be equipped with self-confidence and leadership skills to stay strong and move ahead even when they’ve passed out of school.
These skills combined with education will give them a broader outlook on how to handle challenges and create a better vision for themselves,” he explained. Committed to changing lives, Phani recalled a moment when a child wrote him a heart-felt note.
“This child, who I had taught, wrote to me saying how dance has changed his life and it was so touching. I also have fond memories of working with mentally-challenged children, who really touched my heart,” recalled this dancer, who holds a Master’s in Human Resource Management.
Phani is one among the two Indians chosen to participate in the Asia Pacific Leadership Program. “This 9-month programme in Hawaii, helps people become community leaders. I think it will help me a great deal in designing the module. I have already acquired sponsorship for most of the programme but I still need Rs. 5 Lakh for living and travelling expenses. I have started a crowd-funding campaign on Wishberry to fund my dreams and bring a change in our learning environment,” he concluded.
