The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem. When police questioned Joseph he made contradictory statements and hence police have doubts over his version. As Joseph and Mary got married just four years ago, a RDO inquiry has also been initiated. Police claimed that Joseph, working as an attender in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, used to go to home in an inebriated state. There were frequent quarrels between the couple. On Friday night too, Joseph came home drunk and had a tiff with her. But Joseph had first claimed that he went out after the fight and when he came back he saw her dead. There was no truth in Joseph’s statement, police feel.
Joseph had also said that immediately after the fight Mary had committed suicide. But in the subsequent statements he had said that he had gone out and Mary was alone when she committed suicide.
The body of Mary had injuries and when Joseph was questioned regarding that Joseph had said that the injuries were sustained during the fight and he had not killed her. Hence there was suspicion around the death of Mary, according to sources. A case of suspicious death under Section 174 of CrPC had been booked, police claimed.
