The weapon was found near the track, a few metres away from the scene of crime. Finger prints from the weapon have lifted and sent for matching with the others in the data base.
Meanwhile, the team despite having strong leads could not record the arrest of the accused. Sources in GRP told DTNext that an acquaintance of the victim has committed the crime and the person would be nabbed soon.
The GRP personnel have also taken a youth from Triplicane, who is said to have a close relationship with the victim, into custody on Friday morning for questioning.
However, police have ruled out his or his family’s involvement in the murder. “We have thoroughly investigated that angle. There had been some disputes between the youth’s family and the victim’s
over their friendship. However, we have ruled out any involvement of the youth or his family in the matter,” a railway police official said.
Meanwhile sources in the city police here said that the victim’s parents had not lodged a complaint seeking protection from any stalker. “They had not lodged any complaint. However, there are indications that the girl had been having some trouble with another youth. We are yet to ascertain whether he was a stalker or a friend turned foe,” a senior city police official said. Police have passed on the description of the suspected youth to all police stations and also to the check posts at the exit points to prevent him from leaving the state.
“We are on the track and will be arresting the accused soon. We are not in a position to reveal the motive at present as the investigation is progressing,” GRP IG M Ramasubramani, said.
No one ready to share info on murder: GRP official
The GRP team, which managed to trace everyone, including those who were present at the Nungambakkam station at the time of crime and others who travelled by trains that passed through the station at the time of the incident, could not even get a single eye-witness so far. The investigation team members said that nobody shared or were willing to share any information with the police regarding the incident or about the accused, even after repeated requests. “Even after a CCTV grab of a suspect was released and public were requested to share information with cops, not a single person has called us so far to give any detail. Though many were present at the time of the ghastly murder, nobody came forward to give us any leads,” an official regretted. The insensitivity of the onlookers was so evident that not even one person came forward to take the injured victim to hospital. “People just watched the injured girl bleeding and writhing in pain till police arrived at the spot. Many who had seen the girl bleeding to death on the platform took the train and escaped,” a police official added.
