While the entire city police force was out on the streets flushing out rowdies and petty criminals, a local rowdy was hacked to death by an armed gang on arterial Anna Salai, in Nandanam around 8.30 pm on Sunday.

The armed gang seemed oblivious to the jam-packed road when they hacked A Velu alias Adyar Velu (38), who is a murder accused, to death. The gang managed to escape after confirming Velu was dead. The Police immediately arrested six accused, including a woman in the case.

According to the police, the gang intercepted Velu, when he was travelling on his bike and hacked him to death near YMCA ground at Nandanam. Velu died on the spot and the police shifted his body to Government Royapettah Hospital.

A special team formed under Saidapet law and order Inspector on Monday arrested R Sasikumar (36), a resident of T Nagar. Based on the statement given by him, they picked up Varadhan alias Palai Varadhan (31) of Avadi, D Srinivasan (33) of New Washermanpet, Madhan alias Vellai Madhan (31) of Tiruvottiyur and R Sekar (38) of Chengalpet.

Police said the gang members Varadhan and Sekar were already accused in other homicide cases. Police interrogated them and found out that the killing had been carried out as a revenge murder.

Police said Velu’s brother Siva was killed in 2013 by one Kandhan. Velu retaliated in 2014 and murdered Kandhan with the help of his associates.

As Kandhan’s wife, Devi wanted to avenge his death, she hired gang members through her friends Rukmangathan and Prasanna of Tiruvottiyur. Police said those accused in the murder were friends of Rukmangathan and Prasanna.

Following the confession of the accused, police arrested Devi (32), a resident of Dr Ambedkar Nagar, Mangaleri, Thiruvanmiyur. Police are in search of the absconding accused Rukmangathan and Prasanna.
