    CSE bounces back in general counselling

    Computer science and engineering has turned out to be one of the most sought after branches in Government’s single window counselling for engineering colleges in the state (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions-TNEA) this year.

    On the first day of counselling for academic category on Monday, of the 1,651 candidates who took part, 463 preferred to join electronics and communication engineering, 351 opted computer science and engineering, 331 (mechanical engineering), followed by 121 (information technology). According to TNEA data, there are 29,071 seats from the computer science and engineering branch and 9,971 of Information Technology seats in the government’s single window counselling for engineering colleges this year. 

    Students say that computer science and information technology branches have a lot of scope and IT companies have been recruiting numerous engineering graduates in the recent past. One of the students, who had taken computer science and engineering said that she had taken the stream as it provided a lot of opportunities and scope for career development. 

    Purushothaman K, regional senior director of National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), said the IT sector is the one, which still witnesses growth. “We (IT industry) are growing at a rate of 13 to 15 per cent year after year. Automobile companies are also looking at Information Technology (IT) professionals because Internet of Things (IoT) intervention is happening in the automobile sector,” he said.
