    Dog abusers surrender, secure bail

Two medical students, who figured in a video on social media showing them throwing a dog from the terrace of a multi-storey building, were granted bail by a Sriperumbudur court after they surrendered at the Kundrathur police station on Wednesday.

Honorary Animal Welfare Officer Antony Rubin, who lodged a complaint over the act and the youth in the video, said, “The two suspects, Gautam S and Ashish Paul, were produced before a Sriperumbudur court.

A petition was moved for 15-day custody of the suspects. But, the court granted bail to them. We have decided to challenge the bail granted to them.” Sources said, the canine is now under the care of the Madras Veterinary College at Vepery. Shravan Krishnan, who rescued the dog, said, “The fivemonth-old animal has sustained fractures in 2 places: her right hind leg and her spine. Since the fractures have happened around 2 weeks ago, the bones have already fused to a considerable extent.”

However, Shravan is disappointed that the abusers have been let off. “After a lot of efforts we managed to rescue the dog and identify the abusers. But they got bail in less than 30 minutes. It is truly a black day for animal welfare,” he concluded. The case made headlines globally and animal lovers have condemned the act strongly.
