The incident came to light when villagers of Villeseri near Kovilapatti stumbled upon 10 sacks of chocolates on Thursday night, while out inspecting their farm lands. The sacks were abandoned near a burial ground   and on inspection the villagers found the chocolates were in a powdery form and left them alone.

However, when the villagers ventured out into the fields on Friday morning, they found more sacks of chocolates near Kammai and nearby farms. Suspecting that it was unlikely to be sweet news, villagers informed the police. On checking the sacks, police too sensed that something was wrong with the chocolates and immediately contacted the officials of Food Safety and Standards department who rushed to the spot and inspected the candies.

The officials took a few samples to be sent for testing and destroyed the rest. When contacted by DTNext, officials said they would get a clear picture only after the results of the test reached them. However, they said the chocolates were unlike any that were sold in shops in the area. Sources close to the officials also said that the chocolates, when tasted, appeared to have an unknown flavour and taste.

According to Gurusamy, a villager who saw the chocolates near the Kammai, they all touched the chocolates and they were powdery in nature. “It smelt like rotten curd. When we tasted it, it was like a tobacco product,” he said, adding chocolates like the ones seized have not been in the village until now. Many said such large amount of chocolates was   a surprise, and was sheer over-supply for such a small hamlet.

The incident has also made the villagers look for unusual sightings. One villager claimed that in the last few days several mysterious things have taken place in the place, even though no strangers had entered the village. Police said investigations were underway.
