Three held for Rs 40 lakh theft
The Elephant Gate police on Friday arrested three workers who had stolen Rs 40 lakh from a house where they had come to work. The trio had stolen the money from a pooja room. It was earmarked by one Sampath Raj for his niece’s marriage.

Police said Surendar Bothra, son of Sampath Raj, residing on Pommiliyar Street, Sowcarpet, had lodged a complaint with the Elephant Gate police after he found the money missing from the pooja room.
Bothra said his father who had gone to their native place had instructed him on July 6 to check if the money in the pooja room was intact When he checked the suitcase there, he found the cash missing. Police were called and on Friday they arrested B Saravanan (29) of Ennore, G Naveendar (29) of Tiruvallur and R Sudhakar (22) of Ennore.
Police said the trio had visited Bothra’s house for electrical and plumbing work in May this year and during their assignment they had noticed Sampath Raj going into the pooja room very often.
They took the money from the suitcase and hid it outside the house. While returning after work, they carried the money in their bags and also in their apparel. Police have recovered Rs 12 lakh, three two-wheelers, mobile phones, a four-wheeler, television sets and gold jewellery which were bought with the stolen money.
