‘Announcement on Amma motels likely in next session’
An announcement on the most anticipated Amma motels may be expected in the next Assembly session, according to Transport Department sources.

Chennai
Transport department officials, who attended a meeting last week about opening of Amma motels with Consumer Protection Committee representatives, were keen to get the latter’s reaction as it was thought to be a people-friendly scheme.
While the Civil Supplies Commissionerate sources said the minutes of the meeting are being readied for circulation, transport department officials said the file would be created only after an assembly announcement.
Most of SETC and TNSTC passengers have been complaining about the dismal performance of wayside eateries where the bus crew stop, said the department sources. Not only is the quality of food criticised, the prices are said to be exorbitant.
Those running such eateries are not worried about MRP as even the price-tagged one litre drinking water bottle is sold at Rs 5 extra. The only question is about fixing the government agency to provide essential commodities for the proposed motels. With local Amma canteens attached to local bodies, it has been suggested that motels which would come up in rural areas can be brought under the control of the DSO (district supply officer) who provides essential commodities to the PDS (Public Distribution System) in the districts.
Now, the civil supplies department provides essential commodities to Amma canteens at subsidised rates. “People are receptive to the idea of Amma motels. Anything which ensures us quality fare at nominal cost will be welcomed. The response will be more overwhelming if only clean toilet facilities — especially for women — are provided,” said T Rajan a frequent traveller.
