State to reply to DMK plea on EVM usage
The Madras High Court has asked the state government to reply to a plea from the DMK over compulsory use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), not only in urban areas but also in rural pockets during the local body elections.

Chennai
A division bench comprising Justice Huluvadi and Justice MV Muralidharan ordered notice to the State returnable in three weeks and posted the case for further hearing to August 1.
DMK’s organisation secretary RS Bharathi in his plea had sought a direction to take necessary and appropriate steps for compulsory usage of Electronic Voting Machines by the state Election Commission for all posts of rural local bodies besides instead of merely confining it to Municipal Corporations.
He also noted that while EVMs were being used for urban local bodies, only ballot papers of different colours were being used for rural bodies, which was ‘improper’.
Bharathi also submitted that upgrading to EVMs would reduce cost and also save time during casting of votes and their counting.
