Sources said that two youth, after buying clothes from Ganesh’s textile shop, allegedly did not pay the bill amount and threatened Ganesh of dire consequences. The duo then left the shop without paying the bill and returned with two more aides to attack the shop owner. Armed with deadly weapons, the gang hit him on his neck, face and head before fleeing from the spot.
Ganesh who was lying in a pool of blood was rushed to Arani government hospital by his employees. Condemning the brutal attack, the shopkeepers, members and functionaries of traders’ association and staff in the area staged a road blockade on Vandavasi road calling for immediate arrest of the gang. Arani town police, who reached the spot, held negotiations and promised immediate action after which the demonstrators dispersed.
The police have found clues about the attackers from CCTV cameras in the shop. They detained Pichai mani alias Venkatesan, Manivannan and Settu of Ambethkar Nagar and are searching for Maha alias Kumar. Police sources said Pichai Mani, a functionary of Puratchi Bharatham party, had an old enmity with Ganesh. He was an accused in a murder case and had come out on bail only a few days ago.
