Sadhus of the holy Hindu centre objected to the statue being installed there saying that it would be a hindrance during the Kumbh Mela festival. The project had been opposed by the Ganga Sabha and Akhil Bharatiya Teerth Purohit Mahasabha, another body of priests in Haridwar.  The sadhus agitated for the whole of Tuesday night, compelling the administration to shift the statue to the nearby Dam Kothi guest house at about 4 am on Wednesday. Tarun Vijay has not obtained proper permission to install the statue at any other place. Therefore, officials have bundled the statue in a plastic bag and left it lying on the ground.

Tamil scholars and party leaders who got hear about this were shocked and deplored the action. Meanwhile, secretary of All India Federation of Tamil Associations Mukundan who has rushed to Haridwar is discussing with the officials and making efforts to install the statue at a proper place.

Tarun Vijay, who is currently touring China, has assured that the Thiruvalluvar statue would be installed with full respect soon in a place identified by the Uttarkhand government. “I have also spoken to the chief minister about taking action against persons who have been responsible for bundling the statue,” he has said.

Negotiations will be held with the sadhus. “No power in Haridwar can remove the statue from there,” he stressed. Meanwhile, PMK leader S Ramadoss has suggested that the statue be brought back to Tamil Nadu and installed either at in the Madurai World Tamil Association complex or the Classical Tamil Research Institution complex in Chennai.  He said, “Since Haridwar has insulted Thiruvalluvar, it has lost the right to have his statue there”.
