CCTVs to track TN boats entering Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan Government authorities have begun to install CCTV cameras on Neduntheevu island, 20 nautical miles from Rameswaram to keep tabs on Tamil Nadu fishermen crossing the international maritime boundary line and exploiting Sri Lanka’s marine wealth.

It may be recalled that Rameswaram fishermen recently complained that the Sri Lankan navy attacked them in Indian waters. Talking to DT Next, Rameswaram fisherman Edwin said, “The last attack by the Lankan Navy was in Indian waters.”
Authorities were forced to take this step following agitations by local Tamil fishermen in Jaffna over failure to act against Rameswaram fishermen by the island’s authorities when the transgressors destroyed marine catch along the coast due with pair and purse seine fishing.
The CCTV camera was recently fixed on Neduntheevu which is six nautical miles from Katchatheevu, sources revealed. Sri Lanka, planned to connect the CCTV at Neduntheevu to TV monitors at their fishermen localities in Jaffna so that they “Could see for themselves who was transgressing boundary lines”, an official source said.
Neduntheevu also known by its Dutch name Delft is an island in the Palk Strait, in northern Sri Lanka. The island’s area is 50 km and is roughly oval-shaped. Its length is 8 km and its maximum width about 6 km. Neduntheevu is a flat island surrounded by shallow waters and beaches of coral chunks and sand.
