The agitating fishermen claimed that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced a small level fishing harbour under Rule 110 in the Assembly. They also said that the CM had sanctioned Rs 25 crore for the purpose. However, the work had not yet been started even several months after announcement. They had already staged a series of protests including hunger strike and kept themselves off shore for several days. Since no official had cared to visit them, the members on Wednesday assembled at the Nagapattinam-Karaikal road and blocked movement of vehicles. On information, the Nagapattinam police rushed to the spot and held talks with them. But they did not move from the spot. Later, RDO Jayaraj rushed to the spot and held talks with them. He promised to inform the state government and get a positive reply within two days. The fishermen dispersed after his assurance.
