According to a Jipmer statement, Jipmer Director SC Parija flagged off the rally. The rally started from Jimmer women and children’s hospital, moved along the hospital roads and ended in the College of Nursing. Public, hospital personnel including mothers witnessed the event and were sensitised to the importance of breastfeeding. Dr Adhisivam, Associate Professor of Neonatology and his team including faculty from Nursing College had conducted the arrangements for the rally.

Apart from the rally, the Department of Neonatology in coordination with other stakeholders (Department of Paediatrics, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the college of Nursing) has planned several other activities for the entire week to promote breastfeeding. All faculty, residents, nurses and students will be actively participating in these activities to make the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2016 a success, the statement said.

This year’s WBW focuses on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that governments around the world have agreed to achieve by 2030. The SDGs build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and cover a range of issues on ecology, economy and equity. The new SDGs aspire to tackle the root causes of poverty and offer a vision of development that works for all people, everywhere. WBW 2016 marks a new start to work together and show how to achieve sustainable development through the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding.

Meanwhile, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayansamy in the presence of Welfare Minister M Kandasamy flagged off an awareness rally of nursing students of the Mother Teresa Institute of health Sciences here to mark the WBW celebrations by the Health Department.
