Petitioner Raja Selvan, an activist from Dindigul, in his petition had claimed that blood separation machines, each costing Rs 75 lakhs, were set up at the government hospital in 17 districts including Dindigul, but they were lying unused for the past six months.

“The machines would be extremely useful for the treatment of some of the deadly diseases such as Dengue,” he had submitted.

The blood separation machine would separate all the components of blood and in case of deficiency the particular part alone can be increased instead of entire blood being infused, the petition said.

When the reason for not operating them was inquired the hospital managements claimed that there was shortage of man power, Raja Selvan had submitted. Hence, he requested the High Court to direct the state government to appoint appropriate number of men to operate the machines.

After hearing the arguments, the court directed the government pleader to get instructions from the government and to submit them in the court by August 11.
