The deceased was identified as Manikandan, a first year student of the Government Law College in Madurai. Sources said that Manikandan had gone to his native village Thiruthangal on Tuesday evening to attend the Karumari Amman temple festival. Later in the night, Manikandan had informed his parents that he was going to see the cultural events at the temple. As he did not return home for a long time even after the events were over, his parents tried to reach him on his mobile phone, but it was switched off. So, they checked with his friends and searched for Manikandan in various places. Finally, they found his body on the backyard of temple with his throat slit and his bike nearby. Shocked parents informed the Thiruthangal police, who reached the spot and held enquiries. A case has been booked and a search has been launched to nab the murderers. Police claimed that the injuries on his body indicated that Manikandan could have been hacked to death by a gang. During preliminary investigations it came to light that Manikandan was in a relationship with a girl belonging to a different caste and that could have been the reason behind his murder.
