Activists: Let animal lovers inspect pounds
Recently Corporation-run pounds came under the scanner when activists complained about their poor conditions or facilities. The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) took suo moto action and ordered the corporation to file a detailed Action Taken Report on the allegations against the ABC Shelters at the next hearing on August 19.

Recently, a video had surfaced online where people could see a dead dog lying on the blood-stained floor with guts out at the pound in Pulianthope. Prior to this, a few activists protested outside the pound at Lloyds Road over the poor maintenance of the premises. “After a series of these appalling incidents, we made a representation to the Corporation, requesting the authorities to take action against the allegations,” says G. Arun Prasanna of PFCI.
“We listed down the violations. To start with, dogs are seldom given proper food, water and prescribed medicine at the kennels. Secondly, pre and post operative care for dogs not available as prescribed. The kennels are dirty and seldom sterilised. Also, as per the rules the dogs are supposed to be left in the same place they were caught for ABC (Animal Welfare Board of India), which we fear doesn’t happen. Most importantly, we mentioned how the Animal Birth Control is being done without partnering with Animal Welfare organisations approved by the Animal Welfare board.”
However, Chief Vet Officer Mahendran has denied the allegations, and has said that all the premises are open for the public, and they can come and see for themselves. Animal Welfare Board of India asked for a report after the Pulianthope incident and were assured that the premises were maintained well. “We asked them to maintain the premises regularly,” said an official.
However, activists are urging people to visit the pound. “We are requesting all animal lovers to visit the pound and assess the situation, and if they have any complaints, they could reach us. We too will be inspecting the premises and assess the conditions of the animals there.”
