Done as part of the Swachch Bharat campaign by 130 volunteers from various walks of life including students, the paintings on the wall talk about aftermath of environmental pollution, civic activism and promoting traditional sports.
The Tiruchy corporation collaborated with the e-NGO Shine Treechy for the campaign and bore the entire cost. Five professional artists engaged in transforming the thoughts of citizens on environmental safety and civic activism into arts, while volunteers aged between eight years and 40 in transforming the otherwise grimy walls into an art work.
The other issues portrayed in the paintings include effects of deforestation and hazards of plastic wastes in water bodies. The painting on the traditional sport jallikattu is among the highlights that grabbed people’s attention.
The street art drive, which commenced by 7 am on Saturday, continued till noon in which as many as 19 paintings were given life in the 200m wall. “This will hopefully make public think about littering and urinating in public places,” said, Vasanthanidhi, coordinator of the event.
