The man, identified as Lourd Samy, a native of Vaniyambadi in Vellore district, suffered serious injuries on his neck and was first rushed to Royapettah Government Hospital and later to Government General Hospital. His condition is now said to be stable.

According to sources, Lourd Samy had come to Chennai to watch the Independence Day parade. When he was relaxing near the Gandhi statue on the Marina, a five-member gang tried to forcibly snatch his mobile phone. When he resisted, the gang then stabbed him on the neck and escaped with his cell phone. The Marina law and order wing has registered an FIR in the case.

Meanwhile, inspector Mohanraj said that the crime inspector was handling the case, but when asked, crime inspector Senthilkumar said the case was handled by Mohanraj and team. No arrests have been made so far in the case.

“We are yet to get the correct picture as the complainant could not speak. The investigation is on,” an official attached to the Marina police said.

The city police had recently erected watch towers in Marina Beach to prevent attempts of theft and robbery in the area and deployed more security personnel.
