The convicts were released on the occasion of the birth centenary of the former Chief Minister, CN Annadurai, just seven years after their imprisonment.

First bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan, holding that no useful purpose would be served by continuing proceedings on the PIL, said: “No interim orders restraining the release are passed and that the persons were released eight years ago. We are, thus, of the view that really speaking, no practical purpose would be served by continuation of the proceedings, as it cannot be really said now that those people have to be brought back to jail.”

Subramanian Swamy had submitted that the release of convicts was for political reasons and not in the welfare of the society.
