Tamil Nadu to move Supreme Court over Cauvery water row
The state government will soon file an interim petition in the Supreme Court seeking to direct Karnataka to release water for irrigation of the Delta region.

Chennai
Announcing this in the Assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said, “I have ordered the filing of an interim petition in the Supreme Court to get the due share of water for Tamil Nadu since Karnataka has come forward to release water as per the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.” She also said she was confident of getting the due share of water “In accordance with the Cauvery Tribunal’s final award after obtaining necessary orders from the Court.”
The petition would be filed in the next couple of days, she added.
Exuding confidence that water would be ‘realised’ at Mettur Dam before the month end, the Chief Minister announced a Rs 64.3 crore subsidy package to support samba cultivation in the event of farmers not receiving the required amount of water and taking up direct paddy sowing.
Want water, not money, say angry Delta farmers
The announcement of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on a special package for samba crop with an allotment of Rs 64 crore has not pleased the Delta farmers. They claim there is no hope of cultivating the samba without the timely release of water and any fund allocation would be meaningless.
According to Swamimalai S Vimalnathan, Secretary, Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, the farmers who had pump-sets could cultivate kuruvai in over 1.5 lakh acre in the Delta region. However, they cannot raise samba with water from pump-sets, and also tend to the standing crops.
“The fate of farmers who cultivate in the rest of nine lakh acres is hanging in balance over the Cavuery river water. Without releasing water, there is no use of allocating funds for samba ,” said farmers.
