    Minister visits victims of mystery fever at hospital

    Following the death of four children in an outbreak of a ‘mystery’ fever in Kaverirajapuram here, Health Minister C Vijayabaskar and Secretary of health department Radhakrishnan inspected the villages and paid a visit to the Tiruvallur government hospital, where people are undergoing treatment, on Sunday

    It may be recalled that four children from the locality who were admitted in the Egmore child care hospital for treatment, died on Friday and Saturday. According to sources, four kids belonging to Arundhathi Colony and Adi Dravida Colony of Kaverirajapuram —  Santhosh (6), Yuvaraj (13), Mohan (9) and Mohan Kumar (6) —were taken to the Egmore hospital for treatment. On Friday evening, Santhosh and Yuvaraj did not respond to medication and died. Mohan and Mohankumar died on Saturday morning. 

    Sources said that almost 60 families in the locality had vacated the village and moved to their relatives’ houses. Health department officials said 10 medical teams, including mobile clinics, had been deployed from day one after the fever was reported in the locality. 

    During his visit, the Health Minister instructed the department officials and doctors to provide best possible treatment and consoled the patients. District Collector Sundaravalli and Joint director of district health department Dhayalan were present during the inspection. 

    Speaking to the media, the Minister said: “The residents need not panic as treatment is being provided to all the affected people. A child was diagnosed with dengue fever and is being treated for it. I request the people to keep the residential areas clean and drink only purified water.” 

    Health Secretary Radhakrishnan advised the people to visit only government doctors if they had any symptoms. He said that the five patients undergoing treatment in the Chennai hospital were fine.
