The Madras High Court has confirmed the life sentence for all the three migrant workers from West Bengal, who killed and robbed the TCS employee nearby her office at Siruseri in the outskirts of Chennai, around two years ago.

A division bench comprising Justice S Nagamuthu and V Bharathidasam who confirmed the life sentence of Ram Mandal, Uttam Mandal and Ujjal Mandal, said “We hold that the prosecution has proved beyond any doubt, by means of cogent and convincing circumstantial evidences that these three accused alone were the perpetrators of the crime.”

The bench also noted that the trial court had acquitted the three accused from the charge of rape for want sufficient evidence.

“But so far as the other charges are concerned, the trial court has considered all the evidences meticulously and found that the three accused had wrongfully restrained the deceased, took her to a nearby secluded place, killed her and robbed her. Thus, we do not find any infirmity in the judgement of conviction recorded by the trial court,” the bench held.

The bench also ordered the government to pay a compensation of Rs.2 lakh to Uma Maheshwari’s parents under the Tamil Nadu Victim Compensation Scheme.
