Arunkumar (24) of Chintadripet, who was arrested under the Goondas Act in several cases in the past, was recently released from jail. His brother, Arputharaj (18), who was held in a chain snatching case, escaped during investigation. Arunkumar started running as soon as he saw the police who went to his house in search of Arputharaj. When he was chased by the police, Arunkumar jumped into the Cooum river.

The police used a rubber boat on Friday afternoon to trace him but failed. A team led by Egmore police inspector searched for Arukumar for the second day with the help of fire service personnel. Police believe that he could have escaped from the river as he knew to swim. If he had got stuck in the sludge, it would be difficult for him to survive by now. The whole area is being combed for him. If he had drowned in the river, police expect his body to come to the surface within 24 hours.
