Police plan exclusive investigators

According to a senior police official, the primary move is to at least depute inspectors exclusively to handle serious cases and gradually to have inspectors only for investigation. A meeting in this regard has already been conducted and suggestions have been sought to tide over the manpower shortage to implement this initiative, sources told DT Next. 

“We have some top notch investigators in our force. But what happens is more often than not, they are deputed for daily routines like security, VIP protection and to attend to law and order issues under their jurisdiction, hampering dedicated probe into serious cases,” a senior official said. At present, except for cases of theft and burglary all other cases of murder, rioting and arson are being investigated by inspectors overseeing Law and Order. 

They also have to attend court duties for pending cases. In addition to this, they also have to factor in their constant transfer even as an investigation is in progress. In order to tide over common complaints regarding slow investigation, City police are planning to provide intensive training to inspectors in methods of investigation. The idea is to prepare a standard operating procedure with regard to different types of cases and make the inspector follow this SOP strictly. 

“There are several challenges an investigator faces on a day-to-day basis. Securing the crime scene itself is a big problem as they have to physically prevent intruders from messing up the crime scene. Due to our inherent indiscipline people make matters difficult for the investigators and also in collection of evidences,” the official added.
