Residents up in arms against sand mining
Residents of Chinnareddipatti and its five surrounding villages in Madurai district have demanded the district administration to stop the desilting process in their village rivulet, which they alleged was in stark violations of norms.

Madurai
Jeyakodi Ramasamy, former Panchayat President of Chinnareddipatti, claimed that when she was the president, there was proposal to supply water to their village through Vaigai Integrated Drinking Water scheme but they refused as they had abundant drinking water in their village. They had also asked the district administration to provide their quota to a starving village.
But now in the name of desilting the rivulet, a contractor is involved in illegal sand mining, she said. Jeyakodi also claimed that the contactor was given permission to desilt only upto three feet but he had already crossed seven feet. “If it continues all the water resources would get depleted and they would be starved of water,” she added.
