The Tiruchy girl has been admitted to the Government Hospital with multiple stab injuries while the boy, who had attempted suicide, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Sources said Balamurugan (26), of Pichandarkoil was stalking R Monicka (22), also residing in the same locality and pursuing third year at Indira Gandhi College near Chathiram bus terminus. Her parents Ravichandran, a sub-inspector at the Airport police station and mother Fathima also a sub-Inspector serving with the all-women police station at Cantonment, had warned him not to trouble their daughter anymore.

This allegedly enraged Balamurugan. On Wednesday, Monicka alighted from the bus at around 5 pm after attending college to go home. Balamurugan, who was waiting for Monicka, first consumed the poison he had in his possession. He asked her again whether she accepted his love. When Monicka refused, Balamurugan took out a knife and repeatedly stabbed her in full public view. Onlookers rushed to the spot and took her to the government hospital. Another group handed Balamurugan to the police.

Meanwhile, the girl’s condition is said to be critical.

    Behaviour abnormal: Experts

Dr R Sathianathan, Professor of Psychiatry, Sri Ramachandra University says that given the little information available about the suspect’s medical history, one cannot pinpoint the exact reason.

“But in other cases where men chase women, the interest usually dissipates when the woman is unresponsive. But the brutality with which he attacked the woman shows it was abnormal,” he says. Dr Mini Rao, a city-based psychologist, says that it could be a case of the male ego taking a beating, when the victim refused to acknowledge his feelings.
