On Thursday when Mukesh Ambani announced that domestic voice calls and roaming will be free for life and that data will be priced well below its competitors, Chennai resounded with queries. “We had more than 500 people drop in on the day the preview offer was launched. On Thursday alone, we received over 700 calls asking about the product,” says an employee of Reliance Digital Xpress in Adyar.

As part of a preview, Reliance Jio offered free unlimited high-speed 4G data. Customers could enjoy unlimited HD Voice, video calls, SMS and access to Jio Apps. There were serpentine queues outside Reliance stores to enquire about 4G services. Apart from the Reliance stores, they are available in popular mobile stores.

“I came to know that Reliance Jio is offering free SIM cards, which have a preview offer of unlimited free data, free calls and SMS. When I contacted a nearby Reliance digital store, they said, they were out of stock. I reached out to almost five stores, but in vain. I waited almost half an hour in each store, as they were all crowded, with people clamouring to know about free SIM cards,” said M Mathivanan, a techie in Chengalpet.
