Responding to questions at the Regional Editors’ Conference, he said the Centre would completely revamp the Major Ports Authority Act and Merchant Shipping Act. He said deeper drafts were needed as the size of the ships were becoming larger with a capacity to carry 18,000 to 20,000 containers. ‘’For this purpose, the Centre has taken six new port project, including the Enayam port, besides dredging of major ports for berthing of bigger ships,’’ he added. On the proposed Enayam port, Mr Kumar said it was the need of the hour as 25 per cent of the container cargo was transhipped to other ports, causing losses for the trade, ports and exporters.
