Train runs over toddler, mother loses limbs
In a tragic incident, a one-and-half-year-old girl child was run over by a train at the Mambalam railway station on Tuesday morning. Her mother too fell onto the tracks and lost one of her legs.

According to police, the incident took place when Sundaravadivelan (34), who works as assistant professor with Meenakshi College in Kodambakkam, his wife Lakshmi (32), daughter Ekasree and in-laws were returning to Chennai from Tiruvaiyaru by Mannai Express.
The family, which currently resides in KK Nagar, got down at Mambalam railway station on the third platform. Lakshmi along with the kid was the last one to get down from the train when the train started. Lakshmi lost balance and fell along with the kid into the gap between the platform and the train. The kid was run over by the train.
Passengers on board tried to stop the train by pulling the chain, but by the time the train stopped the damage had been done. Railway police sources said Laskhmi had lost her right leg and got her left leg was fractured in the accident. Railway police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
In yet another gory incident on Tuesday, a 35-year-old farmer of Thirunilai village in Periyapalayam died after being trapped inside a paddy harvesting machine. The accident occurred when the driver of the machine operated it without being aware that the farmer Rajkumar was trying to remove hay stuck in the machine.
The farmer was sucked into the machine and thrown out by the harvester. Seeing the farmer in a pool of blood, the machine operator Ramki fled the spot. Rajkumar was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, but he was declared as brought dead by the doctors.
