Niloy Sen Gupta, hailing from Guwahati, was a student at a private music academy near Mahabalipuram. He had gone to a popular resort on East Coast Road to attend a party reportedly hosted by the academy on September 4.

Later, he was reported missing and his body was found on the shore. In what seemed to be a suspected case of murder, sources said there were several underlying layers to the case, including negotiations allegedly held with the college authorities, the victim, his roommate at the college hostel, and an “admission agent” as participants.

What shocked the student’s parents was the alleged indifference shown by the Mammallapuram police at the police station on Monday afternoon and the lack of response from the college management. The parents of the student alleged that the party was hosted by the college management to resolve the issues the hostel mates had among themselves. “Niloy’s parents received a call from the college management on September 4 around 11.40 pm informing them that Niloy had gone missing. The caller had asked them to come to Chennai,” Vinay, Niloy’s uncle, told DTNext. When the family members reached Chennai, the college authorities did not apprise them of the developments leading to the death of the student.

“We started searching for the boy and learnt that someone had seen him near the resort around 6.30 pm on September 4. When we requested for a CCTV footage from the resort, they refused to do so,” Vinay said. The family said when they went to the Mammallapuram police station, officers were not present. “We had to return without meeting any official,” Vinay said.

Niloy was reportedly having trouble with his hostel roommate and his parents had called up the “admission agent” Sidharth R and informed him. He, along with two directors of the academy Vinay and Robin, had talked to both the students and had reportedly asked them to join them for a party at the resort on September 4, the student’s uncle said. Meanwhile, Mammallapuram Deputy Superintendent Sekar brushed aside the allegations raised by the parents and said that the boy had drowned in the sea. “There were 55 students who had gone to the party and they all had a bath in the sea. This boy went missing in the sea and others came to know about it only around 7 pm,” he said. He said the boy’s parents had been raising unnecessary allegations. When contacted, the academy management refused to comment.
