‘Water may reach Zero Point today’

Even as protests broke out in several districts of Karnataka on Tuesday against the apex court’s directive, water ‘released’ from the two dams of Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) and Kabini on Sunday, was expected to reach the Central Water Commission (CWC) gauging station or Zero Point at Billigundlu by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

However, CWC sources said on Tuesday 3,700 cusec was flowing at Billigundlu. The discharge from Karnataka is expected to reach by Wednesday morning, as it normally takes two days for water to reach Billigundlu station.

Sources at Mettur dam said that there was no substantial increase in the inflow and only close to 4,000 cusec was flowing into the Stanley reservoir. Sources attributed this to the rainfall in the catchment area of the dam.

On Tuesday evening, the storage at the Mettur dam was around 75 feet. Meanwhile, the storage in KRS stood at 18.30 tmcft against its full capacity of 49.50 tmcft. In Kabini, it was 14.80 tmcft against its full capacity of 19.50 tmcft.
