Auto men get tips on ‘golden hour’
Auto drivers, who are often the first ones to reach out to accident victims, were on Saturday imparted lessons in necessary first aid treatment method and enlightened about steps to be carried out on seeing injured persons at Devadoss Multispecialty Hospital in Madurai.

Dr Jayakumar, an orthopaedic and spine surgeon at the hospital, told the participants about the three common phenomenon they may encounter on their daily routine and how to address them. He first explained about fractures. “In case of a fracture, the injured part must be tied with a solid object like wood for support and the victim must be taken to hospital without delay and disturbance. Shaking of fractured part would worsen the damage,” he said.
Jayakumar also explained how to address excess bleeding of victims. If an accident victim bleeds profusely, the injured spot should be immediately cleaned with a clean and sterile cloth and tightened with the cloth, he said.
Finally, the issued he discussed was about people who faint. “If somebody loses consciousness and falls on the road, it should be made sure that their heart pumps blood at least 30 times before the ambulance arrives. It can save the victim, he said and explained about the procedure involved in pumping the heart.
Close to 50 auto drivers participated in the awareness programme.
