Planting ideas of green-way to celebrate festival of lights
In a bid to celebrate an eco-friendly Deepavali and create awareness against bursting of crackers, especially among the school students, an environmental organisation enacted street plays. They urged the people not to burst crackers, but to plant saplings.

Volunteers of Thaneer Organisation, who has been promoting various environmental initiatives, on Friday staged street plays detailing the ill effects of bursting crackers in various government schools in Tiruchi. They distributed saplings to the students explaining the threat posed by the crackers and the chemicals used in them to environment and people in general. The members enlisted the chemical content in the crackers and the impact that would have on our bodies.
For instance, all crackers contain dangerous chemicals like cadmium, copper, sulphur, magnesium, sodium nitrate and zinc which pose a threat to the people when they inhale it. Similarly, the environment is polluted 30 per cent more during Deepavali celebrations, they said. Later, the members distributed saplings to the children. “We have already distributed 500 saplings of gooseberry, mango, tamarind, guava and several fruit trees to the students. The children are administered an oath that they will not burst fire crackers,” said KC Neelamegam, secretary of Thanneer Organisation. “A few students even volunteered not to purchase crackers this year. The response to the initiative by our organisation in the run up to the festival is good. We will continue to distribute saplings among students even after Deepavali,” said the secretary of the organisation.
