People in Tamil Nadu have moved away from hero worship, says judge

In what turned out to be a tinge of politics during the hearing of a plea seeking candidates contesting elections to submit their health report to make voters make an informed choice, Justice N Kirubakaran of the Madras High Court made his mind known that the Tamil Nadu public will no longer be inspired by personalities from the film industry entering politics.

Observing that times have changed since the 1960s when the Tamil Nadu people hooked on to hero worship had elected people like Annadurai, Karunanidhi, MGR and J Jayalalithaa, the judge said the hero worship trend has ended.

Coming to the case on hand over health report of candidates contesting the elections, Justice Kirubakaran asked, “When even an office assistant and a high court judge are asked to submit their medical certificate while joining government service, why cannot politicians be made to provide their health report while contesting elections.”

To this, additional solicitor general G Rajagopalan submitted that people in Tamil Nadu voted only based on the symbol of political parties and not individuals contesting elections.

“People must change, not the law,” he added. Recording the submissions, the judge directed the union government to file an additional  affidavit on its stand in 10 days.

Similarly, while dealing with another plea seeking action against those who trolled the Chief Justice on her verdict in the 18 MLAs’ disqualification case, the judge directed the state to file an affidavit about the infrastructure available with the cybercrime unit of police.

The judge also sought details about the number of experts deployed in the unit and the  hierarchy of the organisation by June 28.
