The kani art of weaving was brought into the Kashmir Valley by the revered Sufi saint Shah Inadam from Persia over six centuries ago. The weavers were predominantly of Uzbek origin. It is probably the most complex system of weaving in the world as of today. We started the project in 2007. So, far we have roped in 85 weavers.
What are the highlights of the exhibition in Chennai?
We will be showcasing the kani loom for people to have an idea about the procedure that goes into it. Customers will be able to customise their orders. The aim is to present the rich textile heritage of the valley to audience, far and wide. We think Chennai audience will be able to appreciate the beauty of it.
