City-based designer Nazia Syed talks about her new collection, Rise of the Phoenix, that she will be showcasing at the Goa Style Week on April 1 and 2, the art of designing and Chennai becoming a fashion hub.

Chennai
What is your new collection all about?
My latest collection takes inspiration from the mythical, magical Phoenix which combusts in a show of flames and fire, only to resurrect stronger, more magnificent and spirited. Much like the journey of the sun bird, the collection showcases colours of this magnificent journey — from ash greys and deep charcoal, to rebirth, signified in warm hues like sunrise orange, smouldering scarlet and flaming reds. It is an ode to the strength of a woman, who emerges stronger and more confident through life’s different ordeals. I have laid emphasis on the clean lines, cut and drapes of every outfit. There are cape dresses, flowing maxis, structured tunics and embellished gowns.
How do you go about designing?
I source my materials from places all over India like Bengaluru, Kolkata and Varanasi. I even use imported materials. I take about three days for simple dresses and upto three months for exclusive bridal wear. As a designer I do give suggestions to my customers. If I think something might not suit them then I suggest alternative patterns and designs for them.
Do you feel Chennai has emerged as a fashion destination?
Over the last few years, Chennai has been growing as a fashion hub with several brands coming into the market. There is a lot of scope for new designers with people becoming increasingly fashion conscious and incorporating it into their lifestyles.
