Handlooms get a fresh lease of life
On August 1, new textiles minister Smriti Z Irani kicked off a ‘Selfie with handlooms’ campaign on social media. Promoted with the hashtag ‘#IWearHandloom’ on Facebook and Twitter, Irani launched the movement by posting a photo of herself in a royal blue Bihari silk.

Since the launch of the campaign, the social media is flooded with photographs of young, old and middle-aged in hand-woven fabrics. But over the last few years, the handloom movement has been gathering a lot of steam owing to the efforts of many revivalists and fashion designers across India. Here are some musthave handloom pieces in every wardrobe:
Saris: Handloom saris are a particular favourite. There is a new-found adoration for the innumerable styles, textures, patterns and weaves from every corner of India. India has about 3-4 special weaves that are unique to every state. Sporting them with backless cholis or sneakers, handloom saris always stand out.
Salwar-Kameez or Anarkali: Traditionally a three-piece e n s e m b l e ( kurta with churidhar or salwar and an accompanying dupatta or stole), it has always been a popular choice among women from across the country for its ease of wear and comfy fit. Anarkali suits give a new fashion spin to Indian ethnic wear, with their large flairs and flowy patterns making them a preferred option for glamorous occasions like weddings. A khadi anarkali with embellishments defines a true blue festive wear. A nice ikkat churidhar-kurta is an elegant option to wear to work or any casual occasion.
Jackets, Scarves, Skirts: For those on the wall about going all Indian with their outfits, there are several options like fashionable scarves and jackets that can be paired with anything — even with jeans or trousers and still look ready for the fashion ramp. Handloom skirts look mind-blowingly elegant with lovely indigos and handmade motifs running through them.
