Beauty Mantra: Expert tips to store your makeup products the right way

It could be some product that you finally found after many trials to be keeping your facial sebum under control or reduce your fine lines or acne. While we save a lot to own the products that suit our skin, we don’t pay as much attention to storing them right. While we think that just keeping them in our cupboards would do, but that does not always hold good when it comes to cosmetic products. We bring you these expert tips on the best and worst ways to store your makeup products.

Moisturisers: The most used product in a vanity is a moisturiser. It is always best that you use a moisturiser within a year of opening the packaging. And remember that as soon as you notice a change in colour, texture or smell of the moisturiser, it is time to toss it away as it could mean that the product is nearing its expiration or has undergone a change in its composition over time. Store a moisturiser in your makeup kit and always keep it away from your wash basin. Storing it in a dry place is the key.

Lipsticks and mascara : If stored in an appropriate cool and dry place, lipsticks can have a shelf life up to two years. Beauty experts, however, suggest that one should avoid storing lipsticks in the car or in a handbag as the heat tends to mess with the product’s chemical composition. Mascara and other eye products, including eyeliners, have a very short shelf life. It is suggested that you use them within 3 to 6 months.

Serums : Hair serums are another widely used cosmetic product, to keep the hair in place and avoid the frizz, no matter how the weather is. Especially during the monsoon season, hair serums are saviours in helping us manage our hair without much effort. Experts suggest that serums must be stored in a mini skincare fridge, as leaving them out in the open, especially in a bathroom, could lead to fungal growth in the product. Store all your foundations, loose powders, gels, toners and masks in a nice and cool place. Remember that if you have left any product uncapped or loosely capped, it is likely to lose its efficiency overnight.
