The actor wrote, “My wife filed higher returns than I did last year and pays for her own online or otherwise shopping. She ain’t gonna run anywhere,” with the hashtag ‘sexist’. It was in response to the e-commerce portal’s tweet in which a clip of actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan running was accompanied by the line, “Running to the door before your husband finds out how much online shopping you did.” The clip was from Aishwarya’s film Jazbaa. After the portal’s tweet sparked outrage, it has now been deleted.

Rahul’s tweet was lauded instantly by Chinmayi, who wrote, “This is the kinda man one should be with, ladies. I hope you (and your parents) choose well. Happy Independence Day.” Several other netizens praised the actor as well. The actor reinforced his statement as he added, “Such seemingly harmless jokes keep reinforcing unhealthy stereotypes and make sure women are largely thought of in such terms.

I know as many men who spend unwisely on shopping. How are such jokes never made on men? Such conditioning has for long made women the butt of such jokes and ensured they’re always portrayed like this in pop culture. Fight it. Call it out, and people will stop.”
