New ad shows dangers of texting and driving
A public service advertisement going viral might finally convince all those who text and drive to put that phone down. The 40-second ad produced by South Africa’s Western Cape Government as part of their ‘Safely Home’ road safety campaign was originally posted to YouTube earlier this week.

The video has been viewed millions of times after being reposted on Reddit and Twitter. The ad begins with a series of hapless phone-obsessed walkers ending up bumping into lampposts, doors and even falling into a pond.
Set to a funny background music, the initial few seconds of the ad are rather amusing and it’s hard not to roll on the floor laughing. However, the ad suddenly takes a heart-breaking turn.
The music stops and the footage shifts to an in-car camera showing a woman driver texting and not keeping her eyes on the road. In no time, her vehicle launches into the air and spirals out of control before coming to a halt. The video ends with the woman appearing unconscious with blood on the windshield, before the message ‘So why do you text and drive?’ finally appears on the screen. If you’re guilty of texting and driving, it’s about time you put that phone away.
