When all that glitters is you

C ity-based designer Ananya Malhotra, whose creations have adorned Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra and many more style savants, has launched bridal and bespoke services under her brand Ananya. Speaking about the new endeavor, she says the main idea is to break misconceptions that bespoke jewellery is unaffordable and create pieces that not only suit individual tastes.

Born into a family deeply rooted in the fashion industry, Ananya began to develop an ideology about beauty as a powerful energy, an expressive vibration and a sensual awareness that resonates with the essence of life.

Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree from Central Saint Martins in London, Ananya immersed herself in the art of jewellery, worked on projects with institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Barbican, before setting up her own brand. “Since I launched the brand a year and a half ago, I’ve had a lot of people asking for custommade jewellery.

I found a void in the market in Chennai. Although people here are very serious and superstitious about the jewellery they wear, they didn’t have many options apart from the traditional patterns and designs found in big jewellery houses. That’s when I decided to launch bespoke services,” says Ananya who is the daughter of Tina and Atul Malhotra, who launched the multi-designer retail outlet Evoluzione. “By going bespoke, you can have a design totally tailored to your requirements.

The bespoke journey is a collaboration between you and the designer,” adds Ananya.

Speaking about the notion that bespoke is synonymous with being unaffordable, she says, “In fact, the best part about bespoke is that it gives one an opportunity to create the perfect design within one’s budget.” At the end of the day, she says, “If you’re thinking about a piece such as an engagement ring or special anniversary or birthday gift, the fact that you’ve designed something totally unique with the recipient in mind is a lovely and thoughtful gesture. If you’re choosing a piece for someone special, wouldn’t you rather have something that sums up their personality, is as unique as they are?”

The year has kickstarted on a high note for Ananya as she recently launched her brand in London. “This year it’s all about going global. At the same time, for the local market, I’m going to focus on the sources I get my metal from, for authenticity is the topmost criterion in the Indian market,” she finishes.
