Bottoms Up: Love keeping everyone’s spirits high
Even been to a bar and wondered how the bartender skillfully mixes a host of ingredients within seconds before serving you a concoction to help you reach euphoria after a busy at work? It’s no mean feat. So, we thought we’d try and figure out what goes behind the bar. Today, we speak to Maari, a young bartender at 6th Avenue, Vadapalani, on how he got started at the bar, challenges faced.

Why and how bartending?
It was by a chance. When I started working at a restaurant, I got an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands as I was always fascinated by bartending. The attention that a bartender got was more compared to a waitstaff. That inspired me.
What about your family’s support?
Most of my family members don’t know and now they will know it.
What’s the best part of your job?
Meeting new people every day!
What’s the most important skill a bartender must have?
Being a good listener and a great host
What inspires your concoctions?
My guests inspire me. I have always been a ‘guest guy’! I always make the drink to suit the needs of the guests. I love keeping everyone’s spirits high.
What are your favourite drinks to have on a night off?
Rum and coke or a chilled beer
If you had to create a drink that celebrates Chennai and its spirit, what would you call it?
Super Machi! It would have light rum, curry leaves, pineapple juice, lime and rocket soda.
Signature Drink: True Punch
INGREDIENTS
Brandy: 60ml | Lime juice: 20ml | Elderflower syrup: 15ml | Star anise: 2 | Honey: 5ml | Earl grey tea: 60ml | Orange Juice: 30ml
METHOD
Mix it all together, one by one. Stir well and serve in a tea cup!
