A comic web series to tickle your funny bone
Siddarth Prakhash, the director of a new comedy web series Holi Cow, talks about the concept behind the show, why writing is crucial for web series and what can audience expect from the comic caper.

After working for a short while in the Tamil film industry as a writer, Siddarth decided to take up something more creative and engaging. “With Holi Cow, I didn’t set out to create it as a web series. My goal was to create a world with wacky characters that argue over everything. As I was thinking about what the perfect setting for that would be, I hit upon the idea of a restaurant. I love food and the idea of running a restaurant has always been one of my dreams. I think this was, maybe, a way of fulfilling that dream,” he said.
Holi Cow is about four people who just can’t get along but are put in a situation where they have to come together to run an Indian restaurant called Holi Cow.
Set in Los Angeles, the cast of the series include Naren Weiss, Pooja Devariya, Mohit Gautam and Danvir Singh.
The unique aspect of the show is the dynamics between the characters, vouches the director. “Viewers can expect non-stop crazy entertainment. In addition to laughs, we hope that younger audiences would be able to take away some knowledge from our series. Holi Cow can be a window into the excitement and the pitfalls that come with starting your own business,” he explains.
The team has adapted the show in two formats — web series and sitcom. “I think once the script is finalised, we can tell countless stories and can mould it into both short and long form. We are trying to do something different with this show, by combining the web series and the traditional sitcom formats. This will be exciting because we will be able to release completely different episodes for the web and on network programming,” he adds.
The youngster believes that the web is a great platform to reach younger audiences and a great story would be the driving factor to attract and retain viewership. “Web series, in particular, has the freedom to explore themes which are not traditionally acceptable on TV. You can certainly expect a lot of that from us. I can’t reveal more,” says Siddarth.
As a parting note, he talks about the challenges he faced while writing Holi Cow. “Writing might be the hardest part of this process. Sometimes, sitting with the blank page can be quite scary. I wrote the script for the pilot in early 2017 and after Naren, Mohit and Danvir came on board we did quite a few rounds of rewrites. It was a great experience writing with the actors — we could improvise the dialogues and scenes and I think that translated well on screen as well,” he sums up.
