Meet the baker who brought cakesicles to Chennai
Cupcakes are thing of the past, so welcome this perfect summertime snack and treat, cakesicles. Chennai-based baker Sanjana Robinson, whose company is called Crumbs and Layers, has specialised in making these and they come in all forms and shapes, be it unicorns or minions.

Chennai
It all began when she saw the idea on Pinterest. “I started doing it because no one else in Chennai is,” she tells us. Cakesicles are like cake pops but made from chocolate cake and ganache. They are shaped using silicone molds and coated with white chocolate to which food colouring is added.
The fondant-like icing is then added by hand, in different patterns. Sanjana shares, “I made the first batch in April and it was pretty much all eaten by family and friends. After I posted a picture on my social media profiles, it began picking up traction and now I get orders for up to 50 pieces a week.”
Though Chennai isn’t usually known to be an ideal palate to experiment with new dishes, cakesicles caught on pretty fast, according to this baker. “Initially, people thought it was ice cream but after reading my post or elsewhere, the awareness began to increase. I’ve made Pikachu and Shinchan-shaped cakesicles and even had a special series for Mother’s Day,” she adds. Some of the other designs that have garnered attention are that of a dog and flamingoes.
Though this range of desserts is meant for those between the ages of 16 and 26, it has become popular among tiny tots as well. “Of late, mothers have been placing orders for their kids’ first birthday parties too, which was something I didn’t expect!” laughs Sanjana.
