A musical that questions the current state of affairs in TN
While writing the lyrics for his debut Tamil concept album Amrit Rao didn’t expect it to turn into a social commentary, which questions society. Titled Baemaani, the album strikes a balance between a dark tone and satire — and make one think of the current state of affairs in the state.

The team is planning to release the album on Independence Day. Considering the potential of the concept, the composer-singer has decided to do a live musical combined with theatre, dance and mixed media.
Amrit Rao, composer and lead of the band Amrit Rao & The Madrascals, says, “We all know how powerful theatre can be. While discussing the album with Dushyanth Gunashekar of Crea Shakthi, he suggested the idea of a live show. He came on board along with dancer Preethi Bharadwaj and team. Apart from this, there will be therukoothu and mime with heavy and intense Tamil music that pans across a multitude of genres, predominantly rock. The performance addresses and reflects on several issues that are also captured in the album.”
He continues, “Baemaani means a dishonest man in Tamil. But, we are not pointing at any politician or political party here. We wanted to raise awareness about the various issues in our society and improve the self-dignity and worth rather than being puppets in the hands of vested interests.”
