CHENNAI: A family’s holiday trip to Jaipur turned distressing when their three-year-old daughter injured her finger in an escalator accident at Chennai International Airport on Thursday evening, forcing them to cancel their plans.

The Rajasthan-based family was to board an IndiGo flight scheduled to depart at 8:50 pm. As the aircraft was parked at an open bay instead of a terminal with an aerobridge, passengers were directed to use Gate 104 on the ground floor for boarding.

While descending via an escalator from the second level, the child, identified as Bhavika, got her ring finger caught in the moving mechanism. She reportedly cried out in pain, causing panic among fellow passengers.

Airport staff acted swiftly, stopping the escalator immediately. The child was administered first aid at the airport’s medical centre before being taken in an ambulance to a private hospital in Alwarpet for further treatment.

Following the incident, the girl’s parents and her twin sister cancelled their tickets to Jaipur.

Confirming the mishap, an airport official said, “The child sustained a minor injury to her ring finger and is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Alwarpet. An inquiry into the incident has been initiated.”
