Chennai: Days after daughter's suicide attempt, SI father kills self

CHENNAI: A 55-year-old sub-inspector with the Chennai Police died by suicide at his parents' house in Kolathur on Sunday evening. According to police, he was upset as his elder daughter attempted suicide a few weeks ago, as she was unhappy with the prospective marriage alliance arranged by her parents.
The deceased was identified as Anandan. He lived with his wife, Sarala and two daughters at Thanigasalam Nagar in Ponniammanmedu near Madhavaram. Anandan was attached to the Madhavaram TIW (Traffic Investigation Wing). Anandan was on medical leave for the last few days, police said.
On Sunday, Anandan went to meet his parents at their residence in Vetri Nagar, Kolathur. After lunch on Sunday, Anandan retired to a room, but did not return even after long hours. The family members sought neighbours' help to break the door open and found Anandan to have taken the extreme step.
Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police personnel reached the scene on information and moved Anandan to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. His body was later moved to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police investigations revealed that Anandan's elder daughter, who is employed with a private firm, had attempted suicide a few days ago after her parents tried to arrange for an alliance against her wishes. She is still under medical treatment. A case has been registered and further investigations are under way.
