One dead, three injured in house fire at Adambakkam

CHENNAI: Sasibala (58), sister of former DMDK Gummidipoondi MLA CH Sekar, was killed in a fire accident at her house in Adambakkam, Chennai, early Thursday morning (October 30).

The blaze occurred around 4 am at the woman's residence, which she shared with her husband Anand Pratap (64), a retired chief doctor from Royapettah Government Hospital, son Rohit (23), and daughter Pooja (24), a medical college student.

The fire is suspected to have started due to an electrical short circuit in the living room. Heavy smoke soon filled the apartment, and the family struggled to escape. Anand Pratap, his son, and daughter took shelter in the bathroom, while Sasibala tried to open the front door but collapsed due to suffocation.

Neighbours alerted fire and police teams who then broke the balcony glass and the ventilation window of the bathroom to rescue the doctor and his two children. They were rushed to the Royapettah Government Hospital with severe burns.

Sasibala was found dead in the hall, and her body was sent for post-mortem at the Tambaram Government Hospital.

She was raising around 10 cats who all reportedly managed to escape.

Police have registered a case and are investigating further.
